IMPORT REGULATIONS
Pets
The import of pets is subject to certain restrictions.
Traditional Pets (dogs, cats and ferrets)
- A Zoosanitary Import Certificate (CZI) must be accompanied. This is issued by the health authority of the animal's country of origin and must comply with all the sanitary requirements of Chile.
- In order to be issued the CZI, the animal must be subjected to a clinical examination 10 days prior to entering Chile, in which there must not be any signs of infectious diseases or parasites.
- They must have received a rabies vaccination at last 21 days prior to entering Chile. Animals that are not vaccinated must certify that their vaccination plan is in force in accordance with the provisions of the country of origin's health authority.
- Animals must be treated between 5 and 30 days prior to entering Chile with a broad-spectrum antiparasitic for internal and external use.
- The CZI is valid for 10 days, with a possible 5 day extension according to the conditions of the trip.
- For animals coming from member countries of the European Union (EU), they can instead use an EU-issued EU passport.
Non-traditional pets (birds, rabbits, hamsters, mice, guinea pigs etc.)
- An original health certificate by the official health authority of the country of origin must be presented at Border Control in the language of origin, or English, and also in Spanish. The certificate must correspond to the health protocol agreed between the SAG and the country of origin of the pet.
- If it is exotic wildlife, a permit must also be obtained for its entry, which is granted by the Division of Protection of Renewables Natural Resources of the SAG. The application must be addressed to the head of this Division by means of a letter and the respective form.
- If the animal belongs to a species listed in CITIES, it must also obtain the appropriate permits.
- For birds, the country of origin must be recognised as free from notifiable avian influenza and Newcastle disease to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). the country must have a permanent surveillance programme for infectious diseases relevant to birds.
- The birds must remain in captivity from birth or at least 90 days prior to departing for Chile, or they have remained with their owner since birth or at least 90 days prior to departing for Chile. They must not come from areas subject to health restrictions that have occurred in the last 30 days before arriving.
- Birds must have individual identification by ring, microchip or other means of identification.
- Birds must not have been vaccinated with any type of vaccine for avian influenza.
- Birds must remain in quarantine for the last 21 days prior to shipment to Chile, and must be examined by an official veterinarian of the health authority country of origin, with no obvious signs of infectious diseases. They must then be quarantined for another 21 days at the SAG Lo Aguirre Quarantine Station.

Free to Import
Tobacco (restricted to travellers 18 years and over)
- 400 cigarettes;
- 50 cigars; and
- 250 grams of tobacco.
Alcohol (restricted to travellers 18 years and over)
Currency
- Funds of more than US$10,000 or its equivalent in other currencies
(including the Chilean peso) must be declared to Customs.
Other Goods
- Non-commercial goods, purchased at duty free not exceeding US$500.
- Goods for personal use.
- Gifts not exceeding US$300 in value for each
traveller over the age of 14 years. This is an individual exemption not accruable
with that of other travellers.
Prohibited
The following are goods which cannot be brought into the country.
- Asbestos in any form.
- Pornography.
- Toxic industrial waste.
- Goods which are dangerous to agriculture, animals, or human health
and are prohibited by decree of the Ministry of Health, Ministry of
Agriculture, and other State agencies.
- Used tyres that have been retreaded.
Restricted
These goods are strictly regulated, and in most cases require a permit to be obtained
prior to arrival.
