European Economic Area

  • The European Economic Area (EEA) consists of European Union member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
  • The EEA Agreement came into force on 1 January 1994, and provides for the free movement of goods, services, persons, and capital throughout the 31 EEA states.

EEA Family Permit:

  • An EEA Family Permit may be issued to a family member of a citizen of an EEA member state or a citizen of Switzerland. This permit confirms the right of the holder to enter any EEA member state or Switzerland.
  • A qualifying family member is a spouse, a registered partner, a direct descendent under the age of 21, or a dependent direct relative.
  • The permit may be issued by any EEA member state or Switzerland, except for the country the citizen of the EEA member state is from.
  • The EEA Family Permit may only be used by the holder when they are travelling with the family member through whom they gained the card. If they wish to travel to another EEA member state without the family member, they must show that they meet the immigration laws of that state without the Family Permit.
