Kinderreisepass (German Child Passport)

  • Kinderreisepass are issued to minors of German nationality, up to the age of 12 years. Children aged 12 years or above must apply for a regular German passport for travel.
  • Infants and children of any age may obtain a regular German passport (biometric) instead of a child’s passport.
  • German Kinderreisepass are valid for a 6 year period. They are burgundy red in colour and have the German coat of arms on the front cover.
  • Kinderreisepass have 16 pages (regular German passports have 32 pages). 11 pages are used for stamping. The others are used for a title page, instructions and personal information.
  • The information pages are not security laminated and have a different format from regular German passports.
  • The MRZ strip shows 'PC' for children's passport.
  • The document contains no biometric features (however the photo must conform to biometric standards) and does not have the EU symbol at the top of the front cover.
  • As Kinderreisepass do not contain biometric information, they are not valid for visa free entry to countries, such as the United States. Children wishing to travel to the United States will either need to apply for a US visa or a biometric passport.
