National Identity Card/National Identity Document
- National Identity Cards are issued to nationals or citizens of a country by the government where they permanently reside, and are a way of proving that the person is a national or citizen of that country.
- Cards are issued predominantly to adults or to minors over a certain age. The age required for minors or young adults varies from country to country.
- Cards vary by name from country to country, for instance National ID Card, Cedula de Identitad, Documento Nacional de Identidad, Cedula de Ciudadania, Tarjeta de Identidad, Cédula de Vecindad, and Documento Único de Identidad.
- These cards may be used in lieu of a visa or in some cases will be accepted as a travel document in lieu of passport.
- It is advised that those who are travelling to any country with a national identity card in lieu of a passport make sure that these cards are valid for travel. This includes ensuring an appropriate expiry date, as this often differs from the national passport regulations.
- National Identity Cards may come in various forms, such as a booklet, or a credit card size card which includes details of the holder such as name, sex, date of birth, photograph, document number, expiry date, issue date, fingerprint of the holder and various biometric features.
