Stateless Travel Document (1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons)
- Stateless Travel Documents are issued to a traveller who has any difficulty gaining a travel document from their country of birth.
- These travel documents may be regulated by the 1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons. The 89 states which are party to this convention are obliged to issue travel documents to stateless persons within in their territory.
- Some countries, including those who are not a party to the 1954 Convention, may issue stateless persons a travel document under a different name, such as an Alien's travel document, or a Travel document for foreigners.
- Stateless travel documents are passport-like booklets. The cover has the words 'Travel Document' in English and French, and usually the language of the issuing state. If issued by a party to the 1954 Convention, it will also contain the date of the Convention: 28 September 1954.
- Countries who are not a party to the 1954 Convention may also issue travel documents to refugees, however these documents may not offer the same travel benefits as a 1954 Convention travel document, and may differ in appearance from the 1954 Convention travel documents.
